We were delighted to see the announcement from BAPEN and the Malnutrition Task Force that UK Malnutrition Awareness Week has been confirmed for 2020.
Once again Eat Well Age Well will be joining in the campaign and raising awareness across Scotland.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic our planning for MAW2020 will be considerably different compared to previous years, however we look forward to bringing you more news about our campaign very soon!
Covid-19 Latest Information – May 2020
During the Covid-19 outbreak it is important to ensure that we are still eating and drinking well. Older adults remain disproportionately affected by malnutrition in Scotland with approximately 103, 000 older adults in Scotland suspected to be at risk of malnutrition.
Food access, social isolation and loneliness are significant risk factors for malnutrition in older people and older people are currently facing unprecedented issues surrounding these risk factors due to the recommendations around shielding and social distancing as well as the temporary closure or limitations of many services older people rely on to access shopping, meals and social activities.

In recent weeks we have heard from organisations keen to replicate our Boost Box project to support older people at risk of malnutrition during these difficult times. The Boost Box contains nutritious snacks to help calorie and protein intake for those most at risk.

It’s more important than ever that we all keep our mind and body healthy.
The current advice for the public is to continue to eat as normal aiming to stay well-nourished and hydrated throughout periods of social distancing and self-isolation.

Each of these projects and initiatives focus on the theme of older adults living well through food and aim to support the prevention, detection and/or treatment of malnutrition.
